Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 announced

During a press event, the next installment in the popular Call of Duty series was confirmed by Activision Blizzard, and is now named Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The sixth installment in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, is currently under development by the critically-acclaimed Infinity Ward, which returns into the Call of Duty scene after developing the successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The game is slated to be released in Fall 2009. No further details were given about the sequel, but it is assumed that the story will follow up where it left off with Soap Mctavish accompanied by the usual, addictive multiplayer.

This announcement will no doubt be welcomed by the Call of Duty community as there is still much dissapointment and confusion over Call of Duty: World at War and where the series is going, however, it looks like we will be staying with the modern era for now.

Along with the confirmation of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision Blizzard have revealed a few more titles which are also set to be released; Guitar Hero 5, a \\\"different\\\" Tony Hawk which is set for October release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Ninetndo DS, and a racing-oriented “James Bond” game which is coming this September.

EVE Online: Walking in Stations First Look
CCP Games invited IDN over to Iceland to attend its world famous Fan Fest going on this week, and the company showed off the upcoming Walking in Stations update to EVE Online, the space-based MMO. This will finally let you get out of your spacecraft and let you walk around space stations with an avatar not unlike those in other MMOs. In addition to avatar creation and the ability to make money by opening different types of businesses, players will also be able to participate in competitive mini-games. Walking in Stations will introduce all sorts of gameplay options, but will not include combat or death in any of its many forms.

Empire: Total War Land Battles Trailer
If you like Napoleonic-era warfare, strategy games, or just stunning visuals, then you must check out the brand new Empire: Total War trailer. We previously debuted the naval battles trailer, and now we're happy to debut the trailer showcasing the epic land battles in the game.

We're not sure what we like the most about this trailer. The detailed visuals on thousands of soldiers, the impressive fight choreography as soldiers engage in melee combat, the vast scope of the battlefields, or the pitch-perfect British accent narration. Other things to keep an eye for is the way that soldiers hurtle stone walls, the way that cannonballs carve a swath through a formation of soldiers, and the wonder that warfare once required soldiers to stand in the open while under fire...

Far Cry 2 Hands-on
While Crytek, developer of the original Far Cry, is off tinkering with its Crysis IP, Ubisoft Montreal is busy polishing and hammering out bugs in Far Cry 2, which focuses much more on open-world wandering than the first ever did. With a new engine, a new setting, and a new cast of characters, there's quite a bit different about the sequel. Many might remember how the original Far Cry started off with a kind of pseudo free-roaming island exploration setup and then funneled into more linear gameplay sections featuring mutated monstrosities as enemies. Tropical islands and mutants aren't in this game. This time around it's more about exploration and player choice, something we had the opportunity to experience during an hour-long hands-on session with the game.....

Warhammer Online FAQ
With Warhammer Online launching this week, gamers by the thousands are diving into the Warhammer world and beginning adventures that could last months or even years. We're busy playing the game ourselves for the upcoming review, but thus far everyone seems relatively smooth thus far, an impressive feat considering many MMOs struggle during launch. But to find out more, we were able to shoot some questions toward Mark Jacobs, the co-founder of Mythic Entertainment.

Q: What's the launch been like thus far?

Mark Jacobs: Fabulous. I believe this is the smoothest launch of any MMORPG to date. Since we launched on Sunday, we have had zero game crashes or zero server crashes. We've only had to do one server patch as well. I can't think of any other MMO that has can say the same thing.

Q: Why do you have to accept a EUALA every time you log in?

Mark Jacobs: When we were involved with the case against the gold seller Blacksnow, the judge in the case cited the fact that since our EUALA is accepted every time by someone who plays the game, it greatly strengthened the EUALA's enforceability.

Q: How many players total are you expecting to be playing over the weekend?

Mark Jacobs: More than ever played Dark Age of Camelot, I hope.

Q: How prepared are you to anticipate how many servers you'll need for the first month?

Mark Jacobs: We have all the servers we need to handle every single unit of WAR that is currently in the retail channel.

Q: How quickly do you anticipate players will hit the level cap?

Mark Jacobs: Probably faster than we expect.

Q: How much end-game content is currently in the game for them to engage in?

Mark Jacobs: Well, in terms of RvR [Realm-versus-Realm], nobody is even close to taking down a city yet so I think we have a while to go before that happens. In terms of PvE [Player-versus-Environment], I think we have a ton of content there as well

Q: What's the deal with a number of realms being copied over to other realms? How does this affect the players on those realms, and how many servers are affected?

Mark Jacobs: The idea behind that was to allow entire guilds and player populations to move to brand new servers without having to do anything. We moved four servers so now the players on those servers have no reason to continue to play on a crowded server since everything to do with their character and guild has been copied over to a non-queued server.

Q: Can you give us an idea of how many players can be on a single realm?

Mark Jacobs: Thousands.

Q: What's one thing that, now that you've launched, you suddenly wish you could change or improve?

Mark Jacobs: I wish that the situation with the Grace Period didn't happen.

Dawn of war II
It's hard to keep a good Space Marine down. After an incredibly successful run with the original Dawn of War and its three expansion packs — Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm — it's about time that THQ and Relic got to work on bringing us a proper sequel. We recently got an extended sneak peek (sadly, no direct hands-on) at the game and saw both the Space Marines and the Tyranids in action.

After taking the story in a number of different directions, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II attempts to refocus the action by giving the player direct control of a squad of Space Marines. These aren't just throwaway characters; this is your squad, and they stay with you throughout the entire game. Unlike most RTS games where each mission stands alone, everything in Dawn of War II carries over from one mission to the next.
